Stateville Targeted Again, Wilhelmi Speaks Out Again
Springfield is once again targeting Stateville Prison. It was early in 2008 that State Senator A J Wilhelmi led efforts to keep Stateville's maximum security prison from being shut down, and having inmates moved to a new facility near the Quad Cities. Wilhelmi succeeded, and the state turned its efforts to closing Pontiac. Pontiac put up a fight, and remained open. But once again, this time from Governor Quinn's office, threatened agency budget cuts are targeting Stateville's maximum security section, along with the Adult Transitional Center in Kankakee. A statement released Thursday by State Senators Wilhelmi and Toi Hutchinson objected to the plans, stating that this would be devastating for workers, their families, and the Village of Crest Hill and the Chaney Monge School District due to lost revenue. Both Wilhelmi and Hutchinson stated that the budget proposal already passed in the State Senate would be the first step in avoiding these kinds of cuts.
